45 Days, 11 Projects, One Global Community: RDK Challenge 2026 Summer
Over 45 days, developers from around the world turned robotics ideas into working projects using RDK X5. Meet the builders, award-winning creators, and community voices behind the Robotics Dream Keeper Challenge 2026 Summer.
Every robot starts as an idea. What keeps that idea alive is the person who continues building it. We call them Robotics Dream Keepers.
When D-Robotics launched the Robotics Dream Keeper Challenge 2026 Summer, we wanted to create something different from a traditional robotics competition. The Challenge was designed as a newbie-friendly, step-by-step development journey that could help developers start small, build progressively, and turn their ideas into real, working robots.
Over 45 days, participants moved through three stages — Ignite, Build, and Launch — turning early ideas into architectures, prototypes, repositories, demos, and working robots.
By the end of the Challenge, 11 projects had reached the 2026 Summer Project Wall, spanning autonomous navigation, AI perception, manipulation, speech interaction, patrol robots, education, cleaning, design, and more.

Ignite. Build. Launch.
The journey was structured around three stages: Ignite, Build, and Launch. Each stage marked a different point in the development process, from getting started with RDK X5 to shaping a complete project.

Ignite. Take the First Step
Every robotics project has to start somewhere.During the Ignite stage, participants got familiar with RDK X5, set up their development environments, explored AI capabilities, and completed their first demonstrations.The first milestone wasn't to create a complete robot. It was simply to get started.

Build. Shape the Idea
In the Build stage, participants moved from tutorials and existing demos toward their own ideas.
They began defining use cases, designing system architectures, choosing sensors and models, planning workflows, and figuring out how perception, planning, interaction, and control would fit together.
This was where the Challenge shifted from learning the platform to asking a much more interesting question:What do you want to build with it?

Launch. Bring It to Life
The final stage was where ideas turned into tangible results. Participants brought their systems together by integrating hardware, deploying AI models on RDK X5, connecting sensors, developing control logic, and refining overall performance through repeated testing and iteration.
As the different components began working as one complete system, early concepts evolved into functional prototypes and working robots that could navigate, perceive, interact, respond, or perform real-world tasks.

A Global Community, Built Together
The Robotics Dream Keeper Challenge 2026 Summer brought together 80 developers from 27 countries, spanning Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, South America, and Oceania. And participants came with different levels of robotics experience. Participants included robotics researchers, makerspace leaders, industry engineers, and STEM students, with experience ranging from first-time robotics projects to advanced work in ROS, autonomous navigation, embedded AI, and complete robotic systems.
And no one was expected to make the 45-day journey alone.
Throughout the Challenge, D-Robotics hosted webinars, technical sessions, Office Hours, and community discussions to support developers at different stages of their builds, covering everything from getting started with RDK and MagicBox to development toolchains and practical technical challenges. Conversations continued in the D-Robotics Discord community, where developers shared progress, asked questions, discussed bugs, exchanged ideas, and helped one another solve problems.

This community became an important part of what it meant to be a Robotics Dream Keeper. Not only keeping your own robotics idea moving forward, but helping create an environment where someone else's idea has a better chance of becoming real.
From Building to Showing
On August 13, the Robotics Dream Keeper Challenge 2026 Summer came together for its Final Roadshow & Awards. This was the moment when weeks of building moved from repositories, workbenches, and Discord updates onto the stage.

Challengers presented their projects to the wider community, sharing not only what they had built, but also the technical decisions, challenges, and iterations behind their robots.



The event also welcomed the Ultralytics team for a guest sharing on AI vision, open-source innovation, and the developer ecosystem, followed by a community discussion around the spirit of building together.

Forty-five days earlier, many participants had started with an idea of what they wanted to build. At the Final Roadshow, they could show the community what that idea had become.
45 Days Later: The Builders, Creators, and Voices
Behind the finished builds were the people who carried the Challenge all the way through — completing the journey, pushing their projects further, and sharing what they learned with the wider community.
The Cohort Who Completing the Journey
10 Robotics Dream Keepers successfully completed Stage 3, finishing the full Ignite → Build → Launch journey and becoming the first RDK Cohort of the Robotics Dream Keeper Challenge 2026 Summer. Their completion represented more than reaching a deadline,it meant taking a robotics idea through experimentation, development, iteration, and finally into something they could demonstrate and share.

The Creators Who Pushed the Build Further
Across the Challenge, 11 projects made it onto the Project Wall, covering autonomous navigation, computer vision, manipulation, voice interaction, patrol, education, cleaning, design, and more.Among them, three projects stood out and received the 2026 TOP Creator Award:
Tri-Cam NavBot: Built by Muhirwa Richard, Tri-Cam NavBot is an indoor navigation robot that maps its environment, navigates toward selected goals, and recovers its position after being physically moved — all without relying on wheel encoders.

BETL-001: Created by IsaacRF, BETL-001 is a scratch-built, bio-inspired mobile robot combining on-device object detection, dead reckoning, and a rotating 2D LiDAR system for 3D point-cloud reconstruction.

Korosuke (コロ助) : Created by Kazuki Murata and Kenji Inoue, Korosuke brings the samurai-robot character from the classic anime Kiteretsu Daihyakka into the physical world. Powered by RDK X5, the animatronic combines vision, ROS 2-based motion, local speech processing, an LLM voice, expressive displays, and physical gestures to create an interactive robotic character.

Each project took a different path: from rethinking indoor navigation and building a bio-inspired robot from the ground up, to creating an expressive on-device AI companion. Together, they showed how differently one platform could be transformed by different builders, technical approaches, and imaginations.
The Voices That Carried the Journey Further
Building was only one part of the Challenge. Sharing the process mattered too.The TOP Voice Award recognized Muhirwa Richard, Vishal Kumar Bharti, and Vishal Sharma for bringing their project journeys beyond the Challenge itself — documenting what they built, sharing lessons and progress, and helping more people discover what was happening inside the RDK community.



The Robotics Dream Keeper Challenge had created more than a collection of finished projects. It had brought together builders who completed the journey, creators who pushed technical possibilities further, and voices who helped those stories travel beyond the build.That is what turned the 2026 Summer Challenge from a development program into a growing community of Robotics Dream Keepers.
The Challenge Ends. The Building Doesn't.
Over the course of the Robotics Dream Keeper Challenge 2026 Summer, we saw different robots, different technical approaches, and very different development journeys. But one pattern appeared again and again: a Robotics Dream Keeper is someone who starts with an idea and keeps moving it forward.
That spirit is what the Robotics Dream Keeper Challenge was created to support.
Now, the 2026 Summer Challenge has reached its final stage, but many of the projects are only at V1. Their creators are already thinking about what comes next: better perception, stronger autonomy, new models, improved interaction, and new versions of their robots.
And their stories will continue too. What began as a robot dream has become something real — a foundation for the next idea, the next iteration, and the next build.
